Inside the 66th Annual Phoenix Heart Ball: Scottsdaleโ€™s Most Elegant Night for a Lifesaving Cause

This week on the Scottsdale Vibes Podcast, host Alicia Haygood welcomes two remarkable community leadersโ€”Sue Carter and Caroline Connor, vice chairs of the 66th Annual Phoenix Heart Ball, taking place November 22nd. Considered one of the most elegant and meaningful philanthropic events in the Valley, the Phoenix Heart Ball brings donors, volunteers, and supporters together to champion heart health and raise critical funds for the American Heart Association.

For more than six decades, the Phoenix Heart Ball has stood as one of the nationโ€™s top-performing Heart Balls, distinguished not only by its legacy but by its unique approach. Unlike many galas, this event includes no auctions and no paddle raises. Instead, the ball serves as a celebration of the fundraising accomplished throughout the yearโ€”a glamorous culmination of community generosity, dedication, and impact.

A Tradition Built on Purpose and Passion

Founded in 1959 by philanthropist Peggy Goldwater, the Phoenix Heart Ball has grown into a year-round philanthropic effort driven by nearly 100 women who plan every detailโ€”from fundraising to dรฉcor to community partnerships. Each year introduces new leaders, themes, and initiatives, yet the mission remains the same: to fight heart disease and stroke, the leading cause of death for both men and women.

With over $60 million raised and more than 35,000 attendees over its 66-year history, the Heart Ball continues to be one of the most influential philanthropic traditions in Arizona.

Local Impact, National Reach

While the funds raised support the American Heart Association nationwide, a significant portion directly benefits local research, programs, and heart-health initiatives here in Arizona. This includes grants, community education, training programs, and advancements in lifesaving technologies.

The Phoenix Heart Ball is unique in that its committee is composed entirely of community-based volunteersโ€”not corporate boardsโ€”creating a deeply personal connection to the cause. As both Sue and Caroline shared, nearly every volunteer has a โ€œwhyโ€: a personal family experience with heart disease that inspires their commitment and service.

Stories That Fuel the Mission

For Sue Carter, involvement began with a profound personal lossโ€”her father passed away at age 45 from a heart attack. Over the years, she has lost several family members to heart disease, making her advocacy both personal and powerful.

For Caroline Connor, memories of her fatherโ€™s heart attack when she was a child and the loss of her niece to a congenital heart condition strengthened her familyโ€™s dedication to raising awareness and funding research.

These storiesโ€”shared by so many Heart Ball membersโ€”are what make the event more than a glamorous evening. They make it a movement.

A Night of Elegance and Celebration

Each year, the Phoenix Heart Ball is hosted at The Phoenician, welcoming approximately 850 guests dressed in black-tie attire and ballgowns. With dining, dancing, and an atmosphere of heartfelt celebration, the night honors the accomplishments of the year and the individuals who made them possible.

This yearโ€™s theme, โ€œVision for the Future,โ€ reflects the committeeโ€™s dedication to continued progress, innovation, and expanding the reach of heart-health resources throughout the community.

Giving Back Beyond the Ballroom

While the Heart Ball itself is the signature event, the year includes additional opportunities like the annual golf tournament and ongoing fundraising efforts. Both Sue and Caroline are also deeply involved in other local charitiesโ€”from Phoenix Childrenโ€™s Hospital to SARRC to the Boys & Girls Clubโ€”demonstrating the strong philanthropic spirit that fuels this community.

How to Support the Phoenix Heart Ball

Whether youโ€™re interested in attending next yearโ€™s event, volunteering, or making a donation, you can visit:

Registration details, committee information, and donation links are available year-round.

Vineyards in the Valley: Where Fine Wine Meets Purpose

On this weekโ€™s episode of the Scottsdale Vibes Podcast, host Alicia Haygood sits down with Scottsdale natives and lifelong friends Skyler Badenoch and Ricky Palmer, the duo behind the much-anticipated Vineyards in the Valley event returning this December. What began as a shared love of wine has grown into one of Scottsdaleโ€™s most meaningful celebrationsโ€”uniting community, compassion, and connection over exceptional wine and cuisine.

Now in its second year, Vineyards in the Valley will feature 70+ ultra-premium wineries, local chefs, and unforgettable experiencesโ€”all benefiting Hope for Haiti, a nonprofit where Badenoch serves as CEO. The organization provides vital healthcare to Haitian women and families, including early detection and treatment for breast and cervical cancer.

For Badenoch, this mission is deeply personal: โ€œOur work focuses on improving quality of life, particularly for women and children. Itโ€™s not just about what we do, but the problems we help local Haitian leaders solve.โ€

Palmerโ€™s inspiration also came from the heart. Wanting to honor his late mother, a breast cancer survivor, he turned a simple ideaโ€”hosting a wine eventโ€”into a powerful cause. โ€œI wanted to make an impact that mattered,โ€ he says. โ€œWhen Skyler told me about the women walking miles to get screened in Haiti, I knew we had to make this happen.โ€

An Event Rooted in Community

This yearโ€™s event takes place at the Scottsdale Stadium, a full-circle moment for the friends who grew up watching spring training games there. Guests will enjoy world-class wine, local restaurant partnerships, and musicโ€”all while supporting life-changing healthcare in Haiti.

Leading up to the grand tasting, a series of exclusive dinners at top Scottsdale restaurants like Bourbon Steak, Catch, Hearth โ€™61, and Course Restaurant will pair exquisite cuisine with featured wineries.

Every sip tells a story: of community, of friendship, and of hope. โ€œWe started with a dream,โ€ Palmer shares, โ€œand now weโ€™re helping change lives.โ€Tickets are already going fast for this yearโ€™s Vineyards in the Valley.

Empowering Women Through Connection: The Womenโ€™s Collective and the Sunset 5K for Charity

This week on Scottsdale Vibes, weโ€™re shining a spotlight on the women who are making a real impact in our community. Kira Peters, President of the Womenโ€™s Collective, and Holly Amend, Chair of the Night Run, joined host Alicia Haygood to talk about their mission to elevate women in leadership โ€” and how theyโ€™re inviting the community to join them for a night of fitness, philanthropy, and fun.

Built on the foundation of connection, mentorship, and empowerment, the Womenโ€™s Collective has awarded nearly $100,000 in grants to organizations helping women grow as leaders. From supporting programs like Dress for Success and the Scottsdale Public Libraryโ€™s educational initiatives to mentorship-driven nonprofits like Career Connections, their reach continues to expand across the Valley.

Now, theyโ€™re inviting the community to lace up for their signature event โ€” the Sunset 5K for Charity, happening November 8th along the Arizona Canal in Scottsdale. The evening race coincides with Canal Convergence, making it a perfect blend of wellness, art, and community spirit.

โ€œItโ€™s not just a womenโ€™s event โ€” itโ€™s for everyone,โ€ Kira explained. โ€œFamilies, runners, walkers โ€” even those who just want to stroll and take in the beauty of the canal at sunset. Every step supports womenโ€™s leadership right here in Scottsdale.โ€

The Womenโ€™s Collectiveโ€™s goal is simple but powerful: inspire and elevate women leaders while providing the tools and mentorship they need to rise. Through fundraising events like the Sunset 5K, theyโ€™ve been able to sponsor workshops such as โ€œYour Next Promotion: Whatโ€™s Holding You Back?โ€ and create opportunities for women to connect, learn, and lead.

โ€œItโ€™s not just about courage,โ€ Kira shared. โ€œItโ€™s about giving women the tools to use that courage and take the next step โ€” whether thatโ€™s in business, community leadership, or personal growth.โ€

The organization continues to grow, now boasting more than 20 active members and preparing for a membership drive in February 2026. The team is also working closely with partners like Blue Zones to expand their impact on community health and connection.

Holly added, โ€œWeโ€™ve seen how powerful community can be โ€” when women lift each other up, it transforms not just careers, but lives.โ€

Whether you run, walk, or cheer from the sidelines, the Sunset 5K for Charity is your chance to support women who are shaping Scottsdaleโ€™s future.

Sip, Savor, Shop: Arizonaโ€™s Local Flavor Comes to Scottsdale

Thereโ€™s something special about events that truly celebrate Arizonaโ€™s local spirit โ€” and Sip, Savor, Shop is one of them. Created by A Taste of AZ founders Luke Irvin and Eric Walters, this new festival brings together the best of what our state has to offer: food, drink, and community.

Born from their passion for storytelling and supporting local businesses, Luke and Eric have built A Taste of AZ into a multimedia brand dedicated to Arizonaโ€™s vibrant food and beverage scene. From breweries and wineries to small-batch artisans and chefs, theyโ€™ve spent years highlighting the people and places that give our state its unique flavor. Now, with Sip, Savor, Shop, theyโ€™re inviting everyone to experience that magic in person.

Bringing Arizona Together

Hosted at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale, Sip, Savor, Shop is designed to be more than just another food festival โ€” itโ€™s an immersive experience celebrating local craftsmanship. Guests can explore a curated selection of Arizona-based wineries, breweries, distilleries, and artisan vendors, all while enjoying live music and delicious bites.

For Luke and Eric, the event is a natural extension of their mission. โ€œWeโ€™ve always wanted to connect the community directly with the people behind the products they love,โ€ they shared on the Scottsdale Vibes Podcast. โ€œThis event gives us the chance to bring those stories to life โ€” face-to-face.โ€

Local Roots, Local Love

While both founders have deep ties to Arizonaโ€™s culinary world, A Taste of AZ has quickly grown into something much larger than a publication. Through their print magazine, digital content, and now events, Luke and Eric continue to highlight the diverse mix of cultures and creativity that make Arizona such a dynamic food destination.

Their passion for supporting local doesnโ€™t stop with restaurants or breweries โ€” it extends to artists, craftspeople, and small businesses. Thatโ€™s what makes Sip, Savor, Shop so special: itโ€™s a one-stop celebration of everything local, crafted with care and authenticity.

Why Scottsdale?

When it came time to host Sip, Savor, Shop, Scottsdale was the obvious choice. Known for its mix of sophistication, creativity, and community pride, itโ€™s the perfect home for an event that showcases Arizonaโ€™s best flavors.

As Luke and Eric put it, โ€œScottsdale has always been at the crossroads of culture and connection. We wanted Sip, Savor, Shop to reflect that โ€” to be a place where locals and visitors alike can experience the energy of Arizonaโ€™s makers firsthand.โ€

Taste, Toast, and Take Home

Whether youโ€™re sipping on a locally crafted wine, savoring a small-plate creation from an Arizona chef, or browsing artisan goods to take home, Sip, Savor, Shop promises a day full of discovery. Itโ€™s a true celebration of what happens when creativity, community, and craftsmanship come together.

As Luke and Eric continue to grow A Taste of AZ and expand their impact, events like this one prove that local stories โ€” and local flavors โ€” have never been more worth celebrating.

Giving Back Off the Court: Eddie Johnson and Helping Hands for Single Moms

After 17 seasons in the NBA and a career that included a Sixth Man of the Year Award, former Phoenix Suns star Eddie Johnson has never stopped giving back. These days, the game-day TV analyst is using his platform for something far greater than basketball โ€” empowering single mothers across Arizona through the nonprofit Helping Hands for Single Moms.

On this weekโ€™s episode of the Scottsdale Vibes Podcast, host Alicia Haygood sat down with Eddie to talk about his journey from professional athlete to community leader, and the purpose that continues to drive him off the court.

A Life Lesson in Giving Back

Growing up on Chicagoโ€™s South Side, Eddie was raised by his single mother, Doris, alongside six siblings. He credits her strength, sacrifices, and love for shaping who he is today.

โ€œMy mom had a choice,โ€ Eddie shared. โ€œShe was raising us all by herself, and she chose to have me โ€” thatโ€™s the biggest gift anyone could ever give.โ€

After years of focusing on his career, Eddie realized that true success meant more than just wins on the court. He launched community programs like Accept the Challenge, aimed at keeping at-risk students in school, and partnered with organizations including Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Phoenix Youth Council.

โ€œI needed to start giving back with hands-on opportunities instead of just donating money,โ€ he said. โ€œI wanted to be part of the change.โ€

Finding Purpose with Helping Hands for Single Moms

Eventually, Eddie found a cause that hit closest to home.
Helping Hands for Single Moms provides scholarships, mentoring, and essential services that help single mothers earn college degrees and create brighter futures for their families. From paying rent or fixing cars to offering childcare support, the organization helps these women succeed through education and empowerment.

โ€œHelping Hands gives moms an opportunity to be the hero in their home,โ€ Eddie explained. โ€œBy earning their degree and leading their families, they inspire everyone around them.โ€

The nonprofit, led by CEO Chris Kaufman, has changed countless lives in the Valley โ€” and Eddieโ€™s dedication has helped raise more than $3 million in support over the past decade.

A Weekend of Fun and Fundraising

Each fall, Eddie hosts the Helping Hands for Single Moms Weekend, a star-studded event thatโ€™s part charity, part celebration.
This yearโ€™s festivities run October 16โ€“18 at Talking Stick Resort, featuring:

  • Celebrity Poker Tournament โ€” play alongside sports legends for cash prizes and bragging rights.
  • Celebrity Golf Classic โ€” tee off with former pros, community leaders, and supporters.
  • Main Event Gala โ€” an evening of laughter, music, and inspiration, featuring live entertainment (including a special performance by Eddieโ€™s daughter).

โ€œItโ€™s grown from one small event into a full weekend of fun,โ€ Eddie said. โ€œPeople come out, enjoy themselves, and help us raise money for a great cause.โ€

More Than a Player

From inspiring students to supporting single mothers, Eddie Johnson continues to prove that leadership extends far beyond the basketball court. His belief in community, education, and perseverance has made a lasting mark on the Valley โ€” and on everyone he meets.

โ€œIโ€™m not trying to get notoriety for what I do,โ€ he said. โ€œI just know that mothers need help โ€” and if I can use my platform to make that happen, thatโ€™s what Iโ€™m here for.โ€

Scottsdale Fashion Square: The Evolution of an Iconic Luxury Destination

From Desert Beginnings to a Nationally Ranked Landmark

Since opening its doors in 1961, Scottsdale Fashion Square has transformed from a modest outdoor shopping center into one of the nationโ€™s premier luxury destinations. Ranked among the top malls in the United States, the center continues to reinvent itself while honoring its storied past.

Recently, I sat down with Lauren McGlinch, Events and Communications Manager, and Melanie Sutton, Senior Marketing Manager, to explore how this Scottsdale landmark continues to thrive in a fast-changing retail world.

A Rich History of Growth

In its earliest days, Scottsdale Fashion Square was surrounded by ranch land and desert, a reflection of the cityโ€™s Western roots. Anchored by Goldwaters and Bayless, the original center soon expanded, adding Nordstrom, Barneyโ€™s, and later its signature luxury wing anchored by Neiman Marcus.

Over the decades, the mallโ€™s evolution has mirrored Scottsdaleโ€™s own rise as a hub for luxury, lifestyle, and innovation. Today, it features more than 200 stores, from iconic luxury houses like Louis Vuitton, Dior, and Hermรจs to contemporary favorites like Alo Yoga, Lululemon, and Foot Locker.

Meeting the Demands of a Growing City

Scottsdale is no longer just a resort town โ€” itโ€™s an economic engine attracting corporate headquarters, global brands, and new residents from across the country.

โ€œ2020 was a pivotal year,โ€ Sutton explained. โ€œWe saw an influx of people relocating from California and Colorado, drawn by Scottsdaleโ€™s quality of life and vibrant culture. That growth pushed us to make sure we could offer every shopper โ€” whether theyโ€™re local or visiting โ€” the best mix of luxury and lifestyle brands.โ€

The arrival of Hermรจs in September 2024, featuring one of the brandโ€™s largest shoe salons in the country, underscores that commitment.

Beyond Shopping: Creating Experiences

As McGlinch pointed out, Scottsdale Fashion Square is not just a mall โ€” itโ€™s an experience.

Shoppers can enjoy:

  • Fine dining at Catch, Toca Madera, and Nobu.
  • Luxury hospitality at Caesars Republic Hotel.
  • Coworking opportunities at Industrious.
  • Community events like Scottsdale Fashion Week and partnerships with Phoenix Childrenโ€™s Hospital.

โ€œWe want people to stay,โ€ McGlinch said. โ€œGrab brunch, attend an event, meet friends for dinner. Itโ€™s not just about shopping anymore.โ€

Innovation in Dining and Entertainment

Food is at the heart of every community, and Scottsdale Fashion Square is preparing for its most ambitious project yet: a full Palm Court Food Court renovation slated for completion in November 2026.

The redesign will feature:

  • Comfortable, family-friendly seating.
  • Immersive digital displays, including a state-of-the-art screen on the glass elevator.
  • Upgraded design to match the luxury look of other wings.

The relaunch will debut with a spectacular holiday experience, blending technology, dining, and entertainment in one central hub.

Scottsdale on the World Stage

Fashion Squareโ€™s influence extends far beyond Arizona. With exclusive brands like Brunello Cucinelli, Versace, and Princess Polly, the center has positioned itself as a global destination.

Marketing strategies extend to international fashion weeks in Paris and Milan, ensuring that Scottsdale is not only recognized locally but also celebrated by a worldwide audience.

โ€œOur goal is to put Scottsdale on the global fashion map,โ€ Sutton said.

Community Connection at the Core

Despite its luxury reputation, Scottsdale Fashion Square is deeply rooted in the community. From hosting charity luncheons to collaborating with Scottsdale Arts and Experience Scottsdale, the center continues to give back.

โ€œWe both stay active in local organizations,โ€ McGlinch shared. โ€œItโ€™s about finding the right fit for each event and making sure Fashion Square remains connected to the people who live here.โ€

Looking Ahead: The Next Decade

So, what does the future hold for Scottsdale Fashion Square?

Both Sutton and McGlinch point to adaptability as the key. With Gen Z shoppers returning to malls for in-person experiences, the center is focusing on events, immersive retail, and expanding its dining scene.

โ€œThings are always changing,โ€ McGlinch said. โ€œIn five to ten years, our goal is to keep listening to the community, keep evolving, and keep creating experiences that make Scottsdale Fashion Square the place people want to be.โ€

The Scottsdale Vibe

When asked what excites them most about the mall today, McGlinch highlighted the expanding culinary scene, while Sutton emphasized the prestige of being Scottsdaleโ€™s go-to destination.

Their favorite Scottsdale vibes?

  • McGlinch: Scottsdaleโ€™s country music culture and lively nightlife.
  • Sutton: Outdoor adventures in the McDowell Mountains โ€” balanced with a martini at dayโ€™s end.

Both answers reflect the same spirit that drives Scottsdale Fashion Square itself: a blend of luxury, lifestyle, and community that continues to evolve while staying true to its roots.

Scottsdale is about to take center stage once again with the return of Scottsdale Fashion Week, running September 25โ€“28. Known as the cityโ€™s most high-end showcase of fashion, the event promises a dazzling lineup of shows, entertainment, and unforgettable experiences that draw designers, buyers, stylists, celebrities, and fashion lovers from across the Valley.

But this year, the excitement begins even earlier. On September 18, an exclusive invite-only Influencer Night kicks things off, followed by Core & Couture on September 20โ€”a unique yoga-and-fashion event in partnership with CorePower Yoga, Lululemon, and local wellness brands. From there, the week rolls into four nights of stylish spectacles, each with its own vibe and energy.

Thursday, September 25 โ€“ Opening Night

Fashion Week launches at a private residence with an unforgettable theme: โ€œFashion Through the Decades.โ€ Curated by Robert Black, Scottsdaleโ€™s vintage fashion expert, the show will highlight looks from the 1960s through the 2000s. Expect more than just runway glamourโ€”this evening is part fashion history, part art, and full of surprises. Attendees are even encouraged to dress in vintage fashion themselves, making it an interactive night of nostalgia and style.

Friday gets sultry at the brand-new Caesars Republic Scottsdale with Caesars After Dark. Set against the backdrop of the rooftop pool deck, this show will feature bold designs from Boots and Bikinis, Cammie and Jack, and YY. Guests can expect sexy runway looks, immersive entertainment, and sponsor activations that keep the energy flowing well into the night.

Saturday, September 27 โ€“ The Statement Show

The runway heats up at Mercedes-Benz of Scottsdale, a longtime Fashion Week partner. This yearโ€™s spotlight designer is George Styler, whose avant-garde creations have graced Paris Fashion Week and dressed stars like Nicki Minaj and Rita Ora. Think dramatic headpieces, Instagram-worthy couture, and a true โ€œwowโ€ factor that blends fashion and performance. Saturday night is the ultimate evening to bring out your boldest style.

Sunday, September 28 โ€“ The Soirรฉe

Closing out the week is the Sunday Soirรฉe at Scottsdale Fashion Square Mallโ€”a daytime show perfect for all ages. Families, friends, and multi-generational groups will gather for brunch, shopping, and runway looks that can be purchased directly from featured designers, including local favorites Sandra and MJ. Itโ€™s the most accessible show of the week, combining fun, fashion, and community spirit.

More Than Fashion

What sets Scottsdale Fashion Week apart is that itโ€™s not just about clothingโ€”itโ€™s about creating an experience. Each night offers a fresh vibe, complete with live music, entertainment, and activations that go beyond the runway. And behind the glamour lies a mission: proceeds benefit Magical Builders, a nonprofit supporting women and children through initiatives ranging from beauty programs for mothers reentering the workforce to providing essentials for families in need.

Why Scottsdale Fashion Week?

Scottsdale continues to earn its place on the global fashion map, attracting designers eager to showcase in a city that blends luxury, creativity, and community. Whether youโ€™re a fashion enthusiast, someone looking for a unique night out, or just ready to see Scottsdale shine, this is your moment.

Scottsdale’s Food and Wine Vibes Uncovered

On the Scottsdale Vibes Podcast, we often ask: Whatโ€™s your favorite Scottsdale vibe? For the past several years, the top answer has been the food sceneโ€”and naturally, with food comes drink. What some may not know is that Arizona also has a growing, award-winning wine community.

Scottsdaleโ€™s Favorite Vibe: Food & Wine

This week, we sat down with two local sommeliers, Sage Toomey and Lucrezio, to talk about their funny and informative podcast, The Secret Life of Sommeliers, and what makes the Arizona wine scene so unique.

The Secret Life of Sommeliers

Sage and Lucrezio connected while working at a Scottsdale tasting room and studying for their sommelier certifications. Over a glass of wine (naturally), the idea for their podcast was born.

Their show, The Secret Life of Sommeliers, blends wine knowledge with humor, spotlighting:

  • Arizona winemakers and vineyards
  • Tips for learning wine basics (without the intimidation)
  • Stories from the industry
  • Plenty of laughs along the way

โ€œItโ€™s wine,โ€ they say. โ€œHow serious can you be?โ€

You can listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube.

Arizonaโ€™s Unique Wine Country

When most people think wine, they think Napa or Oregonโ€”but Arizona is quickly making its mark. The state has three main wine regions:

  • Wilcox โ€“ Arizonaโ€™s largest grape-growing area
  • Sonoita โ€“ known for boutique, small-batch producers
  • Verde Valley โ€“ a growing region north of Scottsdale

Unlike larger regions, Arizonaโ€™s wine scene is intimate and hands-on. Visitors often meet the winemaker or owner in the tasting roomโ€”something that sets the state apart from more commercial wine destinations.

What Arizona Wines Are Known For

Arizonaโ€™s desert climate produces bold, distinctive wines. A few highlights:

  • White Wines: Malvasia Bianca (Arizonaโ€™s flagship white grape) and Sauvignon Blanc. Malvasia is floral, aromatic, and a customer favorite.
  • Red Wines: Spanish varietals thrive here, including Tempranillo, Grenache, and Mourvรจdre. Expect bold, fruit-forward reds that pair beautifully with Arizona cuisine.
  • Rosรฉ: A local favorite, crisp and refreshing, especially in the Scottsdale heat.

The desert climate brings unique challenges, especially monsoon season during harvest, which can affect grape quality. Yet, Arizona winemakers continue to produce award-winning bottles year after year.

Behind the Scenes: What a Sommelier Does

Sommeliers arenโ€™t just wine loversโ€”theyโ€™re trained professionals who:

  • Guide guests in choosing wines to match their preferences
  • Educate customers on regions, grapes, and pairings
  • Bring humor and approachability to the wine experience
  • Sometimes even help make the wine

For beginners, Sage and Lucrezio recommend starting with approachable wines like Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, or a French Rosรฉ. โ€œTheyโ€™re light, neutral, and perfect for learning your palate,โ€ Sage explains.

Where to Experience Arizona Wine

Both sommeliers shared their favorite local spots:

  • Erdest Tasting Room (Scottsdale) โ€“ Known for bold red wines and a lively vibe.
  • Vino Stache Winery (Sonoita) โ€“ An appointment-only gem run by Scottsdale native Brooke Lowry-Ide, offering adventurous, small-batch wines.
  • Liquor Pig (Scottsdale) โ€“ A new wine bar with a curated selection from head sommelier Scott Casey.

Wine Doesnโ€™t Have to Break the Bank

Great wine doesnโ€™t have to mean a $100 bottle. According to Sage and Lucrezio, you can find quality wine in the $20โ€“$30 rangeโ€”itโ€™s about knowing what to look for, not just the price tag.

Scottsdaleโ€™s Wine Vibe

Arizonaโ€™s wine scene is on the rise, and Scottsdale is becoming a hub for locals and visitors to explore it. With sommeliers like Sage and Lucrezio leading the wayโ€”through both tastings and their podcastโ€”the future of Arizona wine is bright, bold, and maybe even a little funny.

So next time youโ€™re looking for your favorite Scottsdale vibe, consider pouring a glass of Arizona wine.

The Thrilling World of Polo: My Exclusive Chat with Ricky Cooper

When it comes to sporting events in Scottsdale, there’s one name that’s been echoing louder and louder: the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championship. As winter embraces its chilly grasp, the sprawling fields of Westworld in Scottsdale transform into a battleground for some of the world’s most accomplished polo players. And now, the most anticipated season in Scottsdale has officially begun.

Ricky Cooper Polo

For those unfamiliar with the sport, polo might appear to be a sophisticated form of croquet on horseback. However, when you delve deeper into the game, the athleticism and strategy involved are nothing short of breathtaking. To shed light on this thrilling sport and offer a sneak peek into its intricacies, I had the pleasure of hosting two eminent personalities from the world of polo on the podcast: Sterling Jones and Ricky Cooper.

While both Sterling and Ricky are remarkable in their own right, Ricky Cooper, hailing from Wales, stood out with his charm and expertise. He has been a part of the national polo team since its formation in the 2008-2009 season. Over the years, Ricky has not only showcased his skills in Scottsdale but has also played in countless international matches. What’s more, off the field, he’s an avid marathon runner and ice hockey player, exemplifying the very definition of a multi-faceted athlete.

How it Started

Ricky’s journey into polo wasn’t one he had envisioned. It all began in the heart of the UK when a twist of fate had him residing near the prestigious Sunningdale Golf Course. It was there that he crossed paths with the esteemed polo coach, Peter Grace. Under Grace’s mentorship, Ricky was introduced to the sport, and what started as a curious venture soon transformed into a passionate pursuit.

Polo is not just about galloping horses and hitting a ball; it’s about understanding the beast beneath you, syncing with its rhythm, and mastering the technique to guide the ball’s direction. As Ricky fondly recalled, the initial stages were akin to learning a dance where he was constantly out of step. But with perseverance, dedication, and countless hours on horseback, he soon became one of the most revered players globally.

Polo and Royalty

However, the glamor and glitz of polo matches, especially those in Scottsdale, aren’t just about the game. These events often turn into fashion parades, with attendees showcasing their finest attire, making them as much social gatherings as they are sporting events.

Behind the scenes, there’s a fascinating connection between polo and the British Royal family. Ricky’s team, the Wales polo team, boasts the royal insignia, having been sponsored by none other than Prince Charles himself. These affiliations brought not only prestige but also a sense of responsibility. The team has actively participated in numerous charity games, contributing significant amounts to various causes.

While the future of the Wales polo team’s royal patronage remains uncertain, Ricky remains optimistic. His journey in polo has been about more than just accolades and championships. For him, it’s the spirit of the game, the camaraderie with fellow players, and the joy of giving back to society that truly matter.

As Ricky fondly reminisced about a particular match in Scottsdale around 2013, which remained etched in his memory, it became evident that this sport holds a special place in his heart. As the Scottsdale Polo Championship approaches, scheduled for November 4th at Westworld, the anticipation is palpable. With outstanding players like Ricky Cooper gracing the field, it promises to be an event that combines sport, fashion, and community spirit, truly celebrating
the essence of Scottsdale’s vibrant vibes. Until next time, Scottsdale, See you around town!
